I had quite the internal struggle this past week over whether or not to do a “year in review” type blog. Everyone does it. It’s beat to death every December. I tried to steer clear, but I just couldn’t think of anything else to write, so this is my stick, and with it I plan to beat the dead horse and offer you my top ten albums of 2010.

And in keeping with my penchant to offend and stir up controversy, please feel free to leave me a comment on what you think I may have snubbed or what you think I may have overrated, and I will be happy to laugh at your ignorance.

Without further ado:

#10. MGMT “Congratulations”

Their sophomore effort was met with some opposition, and some critics even panned it, but I thought they really hit their stride here.

#9. The Black Keys “Brothers”

Great modern plug and play bluesy rock. A duet creating walls of sound. ’nuff said

#8. Broken Social Scene “Forgiveness Rock Record”

It’s no “You Forgot it in People” but it’s damn good. Can’t go wrong with a single called “Texaco Bitches”

#7. Girls “Broken Dreams Club EP”

Its only 6 songs and 20+ mins, but it is REALLY good. Endlessly re-playable, heart wrenching music. Read more here.

#6. Twin Shadow “Forget”

Kick ass modern New Wave all done by one guy (presumably in someone’s basement.) I’ve already talked about them, and if you forgot, check it out here.

#5. Broken Bells “Broken Bells”

Although some people I know, ahem!, would disagree, this is a really fun album. James Mercer and Danger Mouse are the best collaboration of 2010.

#4. The Morning Benders “Big Echo”

SO GOOD! Built to Spill meets Grizzly Bear meets Dr. Dog. Jangly instrumentation and disconnection that you don’t have to try to like (I’m talking to you Dirty Projectors fans)

#3. LCD Soundsystem “This is Happening”

They done did it again. Awesome dance(?) rock. James Murphy is the coolest talk/singer in the world. No one does it like him. You’re welcome aforementioned people…

#2. Arcade Fire “Suburbs”

Brilliant music. Probably the best collection of musicians on the planet.

#1. Deerhunter “Halcyon Digest”

If you listen to the podcast, you knew this was coming. If you didn’t, first of all Go Fuck Yourself, then get un-fucked by listening to the show “Cusp” (and all the other episodes) and read my review.

So there you have it. And 2011 is already looking good with a few highly anticipated albums set to drop. Here’s a song from one such album, “The King is Dead” by The Decemberists.

ARCADE FIRE ABOVE LCD SOUNDSYSTEM?!?!? Really?!?!?
NO HIGH VIOLET BY THE NATIONAL?!?!? FAIL!

    I am offended by this!

    Happy New Year, Pierce! <3

Uh… YES! Arcade Fire over LCD Soundsystem. Every time. That’s just how it is. I love LCD, but Arcade Fire is better.

And I knew someone was gonna get all up in arms for not praising The National. But I’ve never gotten into them. I’ve tried, but the lead singer just sounds like he’s bored, and devoid of emotion.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too :)

Since lists like these are designed to start arguments anyway….

    ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY????!!!!!!!

Isn’t Arcade Fire that band that makes pretty couches out of U2 B-Sides?

    Also, YOUR MAMA!!!!

There is NO WAY I agree with LCD being below The Suburbs!!! That’s just absurd!!!

Also, where is Das Racist, Wavves, The National, Superchunk (COMEBACK OF THE YEAR RIGHT THERE) and most importantly-Vampire Weekend’s CONTRA!?

Can we at least agree on the biggest dissapointments of 2010: MIA:Born Free, and Gorillaz “Plastic Beach?”

Love your blog to death! Happy New Year.

You really are trying to start a fight comparing Arcade Fire to U2…
And i just got the Wavves album, it is really good. I may have to bump MGMT and put it in as #10. And I’ve never been able to take Vampire Weekend too seriously. I like ‘em, but not top ten material.

  5. I think we can all agree, Willow Smith’s ‘I whip my hair back forth’ should have made the #1 spot.

Pierce, how could you?! How could you not include that TNT new classic of a song?!

  6. Doug

Oh, I love Vampire Weekend!!! Granted Contra isn’t as good as the first album but it is still amazing and musically more interesting than Broken Social Scene. What? Why is your face all red?

  7. Doug

If I were to really try to get into Arcade Fire in your honest opinion should I start with Funeral, Neon Bible, or Zooropa?

(I don’t care. I’m giggling and that’s all that matters.)

  8. Tom Drake

I wish I knew more about music. I am sure I’ve heard these songs on the radio, and I’ve heard the band names in commercials but I almost never connect A to B unless they’re on Saturday Night Live or the like or caught up in some ridiculously drummed up TMZ scandal…..

  9. Hmm… Decent list, however I find it interesting you placed MGMT’s new album at number 10. BTW they suck live!

Here’s a few i’m surprised you left out

    Titus Andronicus
    Dum Dum Girls
    Sleigh Bells
    Cee Lo Green

    • For me, Cee Lo’s Fuck You should win song of the year, but I thought the rest of the album was kinda average to weak. I was very disappointed. And I actually don’t like MGMT.

  10. Pierce Vernacular

I agree with Robbie. “Fuck You” is a great song, but a great single does not an album make. If I were to make a most disappointing of 2010 list, it would be on there.

And Sleigh Bells is terrible. I don’t understand why there is so much hype about them. “Oooo, look at us, we make noise on computers and call it music. Worship us!” Please…

My list wasn’t the best live acts of 2010, so I don’t care about MGMT’s live show; they tear it the fuck up in studio.

And I’m guessing you only like Titus Andronicus because the word “Tit” is in their name.

    And the downward spiral begins…
